The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's most popular tracks, attracting many thousands of people annually. It extends for some 39km through an alpine region straddling both Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks, from the Route Burn across the Humboldt Mountains to The Divide on the Te Anau-Milford Highway. It is a track renowned for its panoramic alpine views and can be walked in either direction. The area is well known for its weather exposure, and snow may fall at any time of the year, coupled with sharp drops in temperature.
The Greenstone and Caples Tracks are popular low level alternatives to the Routeburn. Commencing at Lake Howden, the Greenstone Track is the original historic low level route to Lake Wakatipu – a 2 day trip through a large open valley system. The Caples Track leaves the Greenstone south of Lake Howden near Lake McKellar and passes through a more enclosed valley of beech forest river terraces, taking similar time to complete to Lake Wakatipu. Both these tracks are within the Wakatipu Recreational Hunting Area, for which the hunting season at present extends from 1 April to 31 August.
